I splashed out on a few Popular Penguins for myself while Christmas shopping today:
- Ernest Shackleton, South: The Endurance Expedition
- Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange
- Nick Cave, And the Ass Saw the Angel
- Truman Capote, In Cold Blood
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road
Similar to my IMDb movie project, I've realised that although I read a lot of books I haven't really read any of the 20th century classics I hear about all the time, so I made the decision today to start with the Penguin classics and move on from there.
(Two or three years ago I got War and Peace as a joke Kris Kringle present - the theme was "long and hard" - and was genuinely pleased to have received it, since I've always wanted to read Tolstoy. But I never got around to reading it and it sits on my bookshelf mocking me every day.)
